BWXT is currently seeking an Engineering Design Process Lead for its Advanced Technologies location!

 

BWXT is People Strong, Innovation Driven – be part of BWXT’s innovation hub. BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

 

The Engineering Design Process Lead will develop optimized engineering design and development processes so that they are efficient, effective, and comply with industry and regulatory standards. This position will monitor the implementation of those processes on an on-going basis, and identify any gaps or needed process improvements, and then lead the work to address those areas. The Engineering Design Process Lead will work in the Systems Engineering & Integration department and will provide support in the form of engineering processes and infrastructure to terrestrial microreactor and space reactor projects. They will work closely with the Systems Engineering Manager and the Mission Assurance Manager. They will also have a key interface with the Director of Quality Assurance.

Job Description / Duties:

  • Develop engineering design processes and procedures to accelerate development of innovative product solutions for our customers.
  • Oversee, assess, and update existing processes and workflows.
  • Establish and track metrics to identify areas for improvement and monitor the effects of changes.
  • Communicate findings and proposals for resolution to upper management.
  • Develop training for successful implementation of process changes, and for existing processes and procedures.
  • In collaboration with project leadership, make project-specific assessments and adaptations of existing processes.
  • Solicit and evaluate end-user recommendations for process improvements.
  • Participate in the Corrective Action Request (CAR) program for improvement of engineering procedures.

 

Job Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in a STEM discipline is preferred.
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in system design for U.S. government, or commercial nuclear and/or aerospace customers is required.
  • Must have familiarity with the requirements of quality programs, such as ISO 9001, AS9100 and/or NQA-1.
  • Must have familiarity with industry design process standards such as ISO/IEC/IEEE-15288, IEC-61508/ 61511/62061, and/or government handbooks from NASA, DOD, or DOE.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence within matrixed organizations is required.
  • Excellent written and analytical skills are required.
  • Must have demonstrable ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders up, down, and across the organization.
  • Must have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

 

Additional Desired Skillsets:

  • Systems Engineering background.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Green or Black belt).
  • Experience in application of Agile design methodology for new product development.
  • Experience working with U.S. Government customer (e.g., DOD, DOE, NASA).

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $92,000.00 and $142,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed ‘at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.  The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
