Main Purpose and Function

Reporting to the Water Quality Program Coordinator, the Water Quality Sampler is responsible for collecting drinking water samples in accordance with the City’s Water Quality Monitoring Program. A significant portion of the sampler’s day is spent driving a city vehicle in order to conduct field work (up to 4-5 hours per day, 4 days of the week). Strict timelines must be followed to ensure samples are delivered on-time for laboratory analysis.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Calibrates, uses and trouble-shoots handheld and onsite water quality testing instruments, including pH meters, conductivity meters, turbidimeters, and colourimeters.
  • Handles chemicals and reagents throughout the course of their work.
  • Enters field data and conducts analysis mainly through Hansen.
  • Updates the water quality database and performs water quality data analysis.
  • Provides support to water quality investigations as directed.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Post-secondary technical training in Environmental Science or other relevant area of study plus experience is desirable, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A sound understanding of water quality parameters, acceptable ranges, provincial and federal guidelines and be able to recognize a suspect reading or instrument failure would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment with little or no supervision under tight timelines.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software programs such as MS Excel, Access and Word Training in WHMIS would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher with a safe driving record is required.
  • The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
