Main Purpose & Function
The Sign Maker is responsible for a variety of sign design and manufacturing at a journeyperson level involvingthe application of fundamental trade practices with a variety degree of complexity. This position works with multiplecomputer programs and mechanical equipment for sign delivery. The incumbent will report to a TradesForeperson, works within a small team and provides direction to several subordinates performing routine signmaking tasks. This position liaises with crews, supervisors, superintendents, as well as interdepartmentally andwith different municipalities, contractors, and members of the public.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates a computer with Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop software to design layouts of somecomplexity.
  • Operates a computer with V-Carve software to output layouts to a CNC machine.
  • Operates a material applicator for application of pressure sensitive materials to various types ofsubstrates.
  • Operates large format Roland & HP digital printers.
  • Operates laminators and plotters.
  • Operates a F1432 Summa Flatbed cutter.
  • Operates a CNC machine.
  • Applies vinyl applications to various substrates.
  • Completes vehicle & kiosk wrapping.
  • Standard sign installation knowledge for occasional installs.
  • Oversees screen printing done by a Sign Writer I.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Makes proper material charges to each job.
  • Understands and carries out verbal and written instructions.
  • Keeps accurate time cards and written records.
  • Acts as a positive representative of the City, by communicating in an effective, courteous andrespectful manner.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of the twelfth school grade supplemented by technical training related to the work andconsiderable experience in sign making or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices and methods of operating computers and computerhardware as it relates to graphic design techniques and processes.
  • Considerable knowledge in software: specifically Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. Some knowledge in V-Carve or other related CNC software.
  • Considerable knowledge in hardware: Large format printers, laminators, Plotters, Flatbed table cuttersand CNC machines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and equipment used in silk screening.
  • Experience in vehicle wrapping is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the types of media.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of colour theory.
  • Ability to prepare and execute screen printing.
  • Ability to mentor Sign Writer I personnel in the knowledge and skills of sign making.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the WHMIS program.
  • Knowledge of all Branch rules and regulations, policy and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, in writing and verbally, with co-workers,contractors, business owners and members of the public.

 

Driver’s License and Record Checks

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipmentoperating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their applicationreviewed in more detail
  • Candidates must attach the following to be considered:
    • Commercial Driving Records Abstract (N Print) for the past 5 years (no more than 14 daysprior to this posting)
