Working Environment

The position is available at the Orbital ATK facility in Goleta CA, part of the Orbital ATK Space Component Division, which specializes in deployable systems for spacecraft such as solar arrays, instrument booms, and various extendible support structures.

As a Structures and Mechanisms Analysis Engineer at Orbital ATK – Goleta you will be responsible for the evaluation of deployable structures and mechanisms at the cutting edge of space technology. You will have a key role in product development from concept trades through the detailed definition and validation (analysis and test) phases.

Responsibilities

• Develop and analyze structures and mechanical joints for moving mechanical assemblies such as solar arrays, booms, and other support structures and mechanisms for satellite subsystems.
• Develop, refine, and validate deployable systems, subsystems, and components utilizing broad analytical skills, such as hand calculations and finite element analyses, or other modeling tools as needed (e.g. motion simulation, Mathcad).
• Perform detailed 3D analysis of components under all launch and on-orbit environmental conditions affecting structural stress such as random and sine vibration, quasi-static loading, acoustic environments, and shock with evaluation involving modal, buckling, stability, and other non-linear analysis, plus deployment mechanics, thermal distortions/interferences/loadings, torque margins, and fatigue and crack growth.
• Document analysis results and develop input to test plans and procedures.
• Participate and present in internal and external (customer) design reviews.
• Strive for the highest possible structural performance that is also cost effective and assures complete reliability.
• Manage and track multiple priorities while maintaining a focus towards common project goals of the program team, matrix organization, and customers.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical, Astronautical, or Aerospace) and 2 years of applicable experience.
• Professional experience and expertise in FEA and closed-form analysis
• Strong communication skills, oral and written.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Ability to multitask and organize/prioritize job assignments in a fast-paced and gated-release engineering development environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Demonstrable problem solving skills with hands-on project experience.
• Candidate has mechanical design knowledge applicable to structures, mechanisms, and material properties.
• Experience with FEA analysis, preferably ANSYS or NASTRAN, for analysis of structural designs.
• Spacecraft/aerospace materials experience in metals and high performance composites (e.g. Gr/CE tubes and honeycomb panel constructions).
• Direct Analysis Engineering experience in the spacecraft or aerospace industry, with key project responsibilities.
• Self-motivated with excellent technical communication skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as in an integrated team and adapt to change and dynamic requirements.
• Strong communication and analytical skills and discipline with the ability to organize and prioritize job assignments and tasks.
• Proficiency with computer aided design (CAD) software, preferably PTC Creo Parametric 2/3 and working knowledge of PTC Mathcad plus Creo Simulate (Mechanica) or MSC ADAMS.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint…).

Additional Requirements

• ITAR Requirements: To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

• This position may be filled at a lower level with BS in Engineering or a MS in Engineering.
