SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Environment and Sustainability group intern will have the responsibility of supporting the Senior Sustainability Manager and staff with various sustainability reporting initiatives and the climate resilience program.  Activities include writing responses to requests for climate-related information from corporate clients, local and state agencies, as well as internal and external messaging. This position begins Spring/January 2020.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with preparation of the company’s annual submittal to the Carbon Disclosure Project.
  • Assist with preparation of the company’s annual sustainability report.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Amtrak’s Climate Resilience Strategic Plan.
  • Assist with fulfilling requests for information from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Sustainability Program webpage.
  • Draft content for internal and external communications.
  • Conduct online and other forms of research to support development of documents and reports.
  • Support collection and analysis of environmental data using online databases and spreadsheets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week between the days/hours: Monday-Friday, 8a-5p

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Pursuing a degree in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, English, Sustainability, Sustainable Development, Sustainability Leadership, Environmental Studies, or another applicable discipline.
  • Advanced experience in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated skills using PC-based spreadsheet (Access); PowerPoint.

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. 

A writing sample of 500 words on one of the following topics must be prepared at time of interview if selected.   

  • Convince a senior manager of a Fortune 500 company to fund a train car wrap with sustainability messaging.  Why should they pay for it?  What messages would be included? What benefit will this serve the company?
  • Respond to a journalist’s request for information on why riding the train is better option than flying or driving.  What research supports this?  Which customer base cares about this and how would you target these customers?
  • Propose a new format for Amtrak’s FY19 Sustainability Report.
  • Writing sample from a sustainability course assignment.

Pursuing a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Sustainable Development, Sustainability Leadership, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or another applicable discipline. 

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: 

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
