Project Overview:

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.

The UPF project has multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime when a business need arises.

Job Summary:

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.

“This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.”

Major Responsibilities:

  • Support field engineering activities for ongoing construction work.
  • Support resolution of construction problems identified to Engineering via meetings, correspondence, field changes, Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), Construction Deficiency Reports (CDRs), etc., as relate to the CSA discipline.
  • Originate or check Civil/Structural engineering dispositions based on review of engineering deliverables such as steel and concrete calculations, Finite Element Analysis of structures, and specifications.
  • Review and coordinate technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction.
  • Schedule and monitor work activities and manage specifically assigned project activities.
  • Assist in constructability reviews.
  • Act as a mentor or coach for subordinate engineers.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BS in structural/civil engineering from an accredited university or college, and 9 years progressive related experience. In lieu of degree, 15 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Have PE license or ability to obtain in 12 months.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education
  • Must be able to obtain site security badge for access to work site.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to independently execute the detailed design of complex steel and/or concrete structures. 
  • Thorough knowledge and application of the AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and ASCE 7.
  • Proficient in the use of structural analysis software such as GTSTRUDL or SAP 2000.
  • Experience with CADD applications, such as MicroStation or Tekla.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, and material requisitions and of construction methods for concrete and steel structures.
  • Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
  • Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.

Preferred:

  • Relevant experience working on the UPF Project or similar DOE Project
