Project Overview:
Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.
Job Summary:
The Senior Operational Technology (OT) Cybersecurity Engineer operates as part of the OT Cybersecurity group reporting to the Engineering Group Supervisor (EGS).
The Senior OT Cybersecurity Engineer has a key role in developing and delivering design engineering products to meet Department of Energy (DOE) cybersecurity requirements and security controls. These products will be integrated into other WTP systems and processes.
A good knowledge of the design engineering work process and industry OT governance frameworks, procedures, and practices is important to success. The ideal candidate will have experience successfully working with Systems Engineering, OT Cybersecurity, and Control Systems in the specification, design, and deployment of highly reliable and secure environments that meet the customer mandated cybersecurity requirements.
The Senior OT Cyber Engineer will be responsible for reviewing and interpreting cybersecurity requirements and determining appropriate implementations for WTP permanent plant systems. This position will be a critical and independent contributor in the design engineering process; originating discipline deliverables and coordinating activities with multiple functions and disciplines as well as with internal and external stakeholders, as required.
The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. Additionally, the position requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Major Responsibilities:
This position will be responsible for executing OT Cyber engineering work assignments related to Department of Energy (DOE) engineering requirements, in accordance with the NIST SP 800-53 standard. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope, and may involve development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. The Senior OT Cyber engineer will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines, partners, and suppliers in the design and verification of the facility OT cybersecurity requirements. The position will be responsible for developing key design engineering documents and must have a broad knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, and design criteria pertinent to engineering and construction.
- Evaluates, selects, and applies standard OT Cyber engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
- Interpretation of cybersecurity requirements and implementation of the requirements in engineered systems.
- Participates in the design, development and modification of control system and telecommunications components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
- Coordinates work and collaborates with other engineering disciplines.
- Coordinates OT Cyber engineering efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction, and other functional groups.
- Prepares conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
- Provides technical assistance to other OT Cyber personnel and interacts with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues and industry codes and standards.
- Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project OT Cyber requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution.
- Supports the implementation of necessary security controls and enhancements on the control systems, as well as reviewing and evaluating cybersecurity implementation as part of a NIST RMF compliance program.
- Works closely with Systems Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Information Systems and Technology, and other cybersecurity professionals to achieve a common goal.
- Ensures a highly available and secure environment that meets the government mandated cyber security requirements in accordance with appropriate standards.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level 1
BS degree from a US accredited institution in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Systems, Controls Systems or related discipline plus 5-8 years of relevant experience; or without degree, 9-12 years of relevant experience.
Level 2
BS degree from a US accredited institution in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Systems, Controls Systems or related discipline plus 8-10 years of relevant experience; or without degree, 11-14 years of relevant experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
- Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
- Experience with implementing one or more cybersecurity program standards (NIST SP 800-37, NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-82, IEC/ISA 62443, or NEI 08-09)
- Experience with cybersecurity controls requirements, design specification, risk-based assessment, and implementation.
- Experience implementing/reviewing cyber security related plans, policies, and procedures in a process control system.
- Experience supporting OT/ICS design engineering, startup, and operations.
- Working knowledge of OT/ICS systems architecture concepts, configurations, and standards.
- Experience working with various vendors control system software (Schneider, ABB Emerson, Honeywell, Allen Bradley, etc.)
- Experience with industry standard cybersecurity solutions, configurations, and practices, to include operating systems, directory services, policy, logging/telemetry, networking/telecommunications, and vulnerability management.
- Experience complying with rigorous configuration management requirements.
- Familiar with engineering design, procurement, and software configuration processes.
- Experience with Systems Engineering or Control Systems Engineering concepts and practices.
- Excellent oral and written communication, planning, organizational, and collaboration skills that enables both independent and/or team approach to assigned technical work tasks.
- Ability to multi-task, meet tight project deadlines, and execute work independently.
- PREFFERED: CISSP, GICSP, CCNA, CCNP Security, Security+ CE or other equivalent cybersecurity certifications.
