Senior Manager Packaging Engineering R&D
The Senior Manager R&D will lead the Packaging Engineering team to develop environmentally conscious and innovative packaging systems for new and existing products. This role directly supports two BSC divisions with a high level of company-wide knowledge sharing and problem-solving interaction. You will ensure that packaging systems protect the product functionally throughout sterilization, storage, and distribution. The role has a high emphasis on understanding rapidly evolving industry needs and driving technology and design solutions to meet those needs.
Responsibilities:
- Manage functional deliverables, ensuring technical excellence throughout process.
- Lead technical group to advance projects, providing guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches.
- Work closely with a variety of BSC cross-functional teams and divisions to ensure an improved, practical, and consistent approach to packaging and labeling.
- Drive the development of new tools and technologies as needed to meet evolving customer needs. Ensure continued intellectual property development.
- Provide guidance and training to staff, help subordinates to attain career goals, motivate individuals to achieve results, and recruit and maintain a high-quality staff.
- Actively participate in BSC cross-divisional Packaging forums to share best practices.
- Assist with and/or complete the development of budgets and monitor spending.
- Determine appropriate staff levels, schedules, and resources. Work with project managers to understand priorities, and plan resource and time allocation accordingly.
- Develop strong team skills, including optimized communication, teamwork, initiative, and managed execution of project deliverables.
- Continuously monitor and evaluate project and department progress and goals.
- Responsibilities include documentation management, understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and medical device industry Design Controls.
- Leads and mentors a team of employees in the achievement of organizational goals. Guides, coaches, and develops direct reports, and drives best practices throughout the organization.
- Fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.
- Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in attaining career goals, motivates individuals to achieve results, and recruits and maintains a high-quality staff.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering (packaging engineering degree preferred)
- 8+ years engineering experience, including new product design or packaging design management and development experience
- People Leadership experience
- Medical device industry packaging experience.
- Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and medical device industry Design Controls.
- Work Onsite in Arden Hills, MN 4+ days per week
- Travel up to 10%
Preferred qualifications:
- Degree in packaging engineering
- Track record of strong cross-functional collaboration, influence, and management enabling highly effective project teams.
- Experience developing a company culture of knowledge driven product development & engineering excellence.
- Ability to transparently and concisely communicate technical issues and risks across all levels of the organization.
- Practiced problem solver, proficient in problem solving methodologies (i.e. Six Sigma, DOE, etc.)
- Passion for understanding and solving problems for end users and internal customers.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis and data driven decision making.
- Passion to learn new technologies and find new solutions.
- Takes initiative and acts quickly to drive solutions.
