The estimated base salary range for this role is “$82,000 to $96,000” per year.
Individual pay is based upon location, skills and expertise, experience and other relevant factors (salary may be adjusted based on geographic location)

Armstrong World Industries, Inc. has a job opportunity for a New Product Development (NPD) Research Scientist, New Product Development (NPD) to be located in Lancaster, PA. The NPD Research Scientist, will primarily work on approved NPD projects and will be involved in all aspects of the new product development process, from concept development through to and including commercialization. Additionally, the NPD Research Scientist will be responsible for identifying technical options, planning and executing lab/factory tests, and resolving issues associated with production scale up in order to ensure that the assigned new product development projects meet their cost, schedule and performance targets.

What you will do
- Providing support to the NPD teams for both sourced and internal new product development projects
- Leading the technical efforts on NPD projects in a way that meets cost, schedule and performance targets
- Completing Feasibility and Development studies in an accurate manner utilizing sound technical and data analysis principles
- Providing technical assistance relating to new product introductions
- Planning, arranging, and conducting factory qualification tests and contributes to evaluation of results and subsequent recommendations
- Conducting and/or supporting the manufacturing process qualification at vendor locations
- Understanding strengths & weaknesses of Armstrong’s product line vs. competition regarding performance and quality attributes
- Working to mitigate product performance gaps by applying knowledge of product line to proactive improvement efforts
- Initiating investigations, identifying opportunities, recommending / approving alternate material substitutions and new chemistries in support of new products, quality improvement, performance enhancements, and/or best cost
- Recommending and implementing process changes necessary to optimize product results
- Actively working with customers, team members and management to determine approaches to problems, new business requirements and application of new concepts and technology
- Evaluating existing and new technologies for alignment with project plans, strategies and specific business requirements. Identifies technical factors that impact business strategy
- Taking initiative to achieve exposure to key customer groups in order to understand market drivers
- Working with corporate environmental and legal disciplines concerning issues relative to new product PSDR (product safety & design reviews)
- Providing technical support to Armstrong Ceilings manufacturing plants as required for approved new products or on-going operations
- Understanding process limitations and process variation
- Understanding and applying material and process knowledge to project work
- Providing an in-depth knowledge of the behavior and performance of raw materials and product formulations
- Working with raw material or sourced product suppliers to insure Armstrong’s performance criteria is achieved
- Proactively transferring technical knowledge to other key stakeholders as required by business need
- Managing risks to bring projects to closure
- Providing training to other scientists and associates on project learnings
- Providing ongoing and effective communications of project activities to all key business stakeholders
- Networking with other Scientists to insure best practice is shared
- Using LEAN principles, where applicable, to improve the overall effectiveness of assigned activities
What will make you successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other related technical field of study
- 3+ years of business experience
- Proven experience in new product development, project implementation, laboratory, and manufacturing environments with 1+ years in a lead technical role(s)
- Results oriented professional who can work across organizational / functional lines and at multiple levels within the organization to achieve targeted business objectives
- Strong organization skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple activities
- Effective communication, writing, presentation, and data organization skills.
- Self-driven, goal-oriented, strong interpersonal skills
- Strong reasoning, problem solving, and logic skills
- Experience in performing predictive analysis and modeling.
