This is a professional Nutrition Educator position with the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program for the Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Collier County. This position is located in Immokalee and provides WIC eligibility assessment and nutrition education/counseling to WIC clients consistent with State and Federal (DHM 150-24) regulations. Incumbent is expected to comply with all WIC and DOH policies, operating procedures, and directives, including information, materials, and equipment security. This employee is required to have an annual assessment for TB, which may include a tuberculin skin test. This employee is at risk for exposure to airborne and blood-borne pathogens. Employee will be immunized in accordance with DOH Immunization Recommendations for Health Care Workers or employee provides proof of immunity for recommended immunizations.
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an U.S. accredited university or college in nutritional science, community nutrition, clinical nutrition, dietetics, or public health nutrition is required. A valid Florida Driver’s License and the ability to provide reliable transportation are also required. American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification (CPR) required. Fluency in English/Spanish or English/Creole is valuable. Incumbent may be required to work additional hours in the event of an emergency or as needed. Emergency duty is required of the incumbent and includes working in special needs or Red Cross Shelter, or to perform other emergency duties including but not limited to responses to threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides nutrition education and counseling (individual and group), to all client types except the medically high risk care plan development/initial counseling (follow up may be provided if specified for the individual client). Nutrition counseling/education provided is pertinent to the clients assessed nutrition problems.
- Assesses all nutrition problems presented by each client counseled and assigns correct WIC nutrition risk codes and appropriate food packages.
- Documents assessment, counseling provided, client established goals and food package assigned in the FL-WiSE computer system. Prepares individualized outcome oriented nutrition plan of care for all clients determined as high risk.
- Provides and documents appropriate referrals including, but not limited to, the immunization program, medical referrals, family planning, smoking cessation, community food, clothing and shelter sources, and other government assistance.
- Completes site record review monthly and submits to supervisor.
- Accurately and promptly completes all administrative forms including computer data entry of time worked/leave in People First and Health Management System (HMS).
- Provides nutrition education and outreach to the community.
- Performs anthropometrics- height, weight, and hemoglobin as needed.
- Demonstrates professional growth through at least bi-annual participation in applicable seminars/in-services. Attends staff meetings, in-services and/or quality improvement activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES DEEMED ESSENTIAL TO THIS POSITION:
- Skill in use of computers, including Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to learn the FL-WISE computer system, DOH software, and use a calculator.
- Ability to effectively perform nutrition assessments and provide education.
- Ability to accurately document patient records and enter data into system.
- Ability to interact professionally and collaborate with clients, community partners and other DOH staff.
- Ability to provide/learn basic nutrition counseling in Spanish or Creole.
- Ability to work flexible hours and work at different locations if needed.
- Ability to provide reliable transportation.
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
