Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Measurement Engineering Intern

 

Scope of Position: Summer intern in the Optical Communications Division – Product Engineering group as a Measurement Engineering Intern. The intern will be a member of a research group involved in the development, design and implementation of a measurement system used to characterize optical fiber. The candidate will focus on performing experiments to validate and improve optical models.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support engineers in designing and developing an optical measurement systems.
  • Run experiments in a laboratory setting
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Document test methodologies, results and provide recommendations

 

Work Hours: Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm

 

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Junior year in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Physics or Chemistry Bachelors Degree program. Graduate students in the same disciplines will be preferable.
  • The candidate must have completed a minimum of two courses in Optics or Spectroscopy

 

Required Skills:

  • Background in optics or optical engineering. 
  • Laboratory experience – college lab courses acceptable. 
  • Basic data analysis and statistical skills. 
  • Programming skills. 
  • Self-Starter and Results-oriented. 
  • Flexibility – Able to change and adjust smoothly as the situation demands.
  • Strong communication skills.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Optical metrology. 
  • Experience in Labview programming. 
  • Knowledge of basic spectroscopy. 
  • “Hands-on” laboratory research experience.
