Project Overview:
The ML2 Project is the design and construction of a launch platform for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The purpose of ML2, located at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), is to provide a launch platform for the Space Launch System (SLS), an advanced launch vehicle that will fill America’s need for deep space missions. ML2 includes many different subsystems that must operate and fit within the constraints of the structure and provide physical interface with KSC launch sites’ ground systems.
Job Summary:
This position will be responsible for assisting the CSA Engineering Group Supervisor in overseeing engineers and helping to execute assignments concerned with specialized or unique engineering requirements in a global business unit. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope, and may involve development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in structural steel design and will be capable of developing design documents that incorporate the applicable design. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors. This position reports to and supports the CSA EGS.#LI-SF1
Major Responsibilities:
Assist the CSA EGS in supervising a group of Structural Engineers and Designers for the Project. Duties will include:
- Approve and act in a design over-sight role for complex structural engineering deliverables, such as steel calculations and specifications, structural drawings, and material requisitions.
- Review and coordinate technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction.
- Schedule and monitor work activities.
- Monitor budgets for work activities.
- Prepare technical reports related to specific design issues.
- Assist in constructability reviews.
- Supervise discipline activities for steel design.
- Act as a mentor for subordinate Engineers and Designers.
- Schedule and coordinate reviews for engineering deliverables for the project.
- Conduct annual performance reviews, coaching, and career development discussions as applicable.
- Perform other tasks as directed by the EGS.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in structural/civil engineering from an accredited college or university, and 8-10 years of progressive related experience.
- US citizen or legal resident.
- Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience supervising a group of Structural Engineers and Designers.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain within 12 months).
- Ability to independently execute the detailed design of complex steel structures.
- Thorough knowledge and application of the AISC Steel Construction Manual and ASCE 7.
- Proficient in the use of structural analysis software such as GTSTRUDL, Staad.pro or ANSYS.
- Experience with CADD applications, such as MicroStation or AutoCad.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, and material requisitions for construction methods for steel structures.
- Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
- Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
- Ability to resolve design issues with subordinates, suppliers, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
- Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills are essential.
- Proficient in the use of Mathcad or similar software.
- Familiar with Bechtel standard programs.
- Familiar with all Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs) and their application to projects.
- Knowledge of design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPS).
- Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence.
- Experience in construction interface and resolving field problems.
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
