Scope of Position:

This position is in the Engineering group within the CET Corning Erwin Manufacturing Plant. The primary focus of the role is to provide daily production support to the plant dry blend operation in the form of recipe management and solving raw material concerns, and lead (or support) more strategic engineering activity such as new raw material introductions and raw material changes.

The primary role includes:

  • Plan, lead, and execute ceramic technology improvement projects and systems to assure supply, reduce cost, increase material utilization, and integrate new products / processes into production.
  • Lead and coordinate receivership of material measurements and improved measurement systems to enable improved process control and process understanding.
  • Provide process support for manufacturing of cellular ceramic products.
  • Data collection and analysis, which includes monitoring physical properties, shrinkage and raw material variation.
  • Interact with CET division engineering to provide linkage with the division technology road map.
  • Administration of Erwin raw materials project portfolio as core tech owner.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Production support in the form of recipe management, material release, and responding to requests from production for root cause investigation when raw material upsets occur.
  • Identify areas in need of improvement and coordinate investigations to successfully implement permanent corrective actions to improve performance and reduce costs.
  • Standardize and document standard methodology strategies for managing material qualifications, composition control and product property control.
  • Reviews, interprets and provides recommendations for corrective actions on key process parameters in relationship to product attributes. Enhance control as needed to reduce variability.
  • Clearly communicate, present and discuss ideas, concepts, operational and project activities to various groups of people, including operators, techs, peers and managers.
  • Attend daily production meetings as appropriate to obtain and share information with operations and project teams to ensure ongoing communication.
  • Reviews and interprets process data for day to day and long-term analysis using the appropriate tools to ensure clear communication of the analysis.
  • Collaborates with other statistical as well as other process resources as necessary to gain and share knowledge, perspective, as well as experiences.
  • Document audits and owning (or supporting) corrective action/preventative action activity.
  • Support off-hour / weekend project or production requirements. This includes support of the weekend team leader when necessary.
  • Provide problem solutions to others as needed. Projects involved with:
  • Raw material and batching initiatives related to supplier change, second source qualifications, and variability reduction.
  • Implement/receive new material measurements and control systems into manufacturing.
  • Support new product /new composition introduction and receivership activity.
  • Lead efforts to standardize Ceramic Technology systems.
  • Product and process variability reduction efforts in materials with linkage to forming, firing, and finishing.

Travel Requirements: You can expect travel less than 5% of the time.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Your typical work schedule will be 8-5pm M-F although you should expect to have flexibility for off shift and weekend coverage is expected to support project assignments including overtime.

Required Education and Experience:

You should have a B.S. or M.S. in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Ceramic Engineering or Glass Engineering required with 0+ years of materials/ceramic engineering experience with demonstrated success of analyzing data, applying data to find solutions, and successful execution of projects as well as:

  • Technically curious, hard worker, ability to articulate concepts/ideas
  • Appropriate approach to solving problems (logical, data-based, analytical approach to solving problems)
  • Data analysis & statistics – ability to draw conclusions
  • Dedication to process rigor and organization skills

  • Experience in process improvement projects
  • Knowledge of data analysis methods and techniques (KT, Six Sigma, Lean) Desired Skills:
  • Ceramic Manufacturing experience
  • Able to work across multiple functional areas
  • Knowledge of PI process book and JMP statistical software
  • Six sigma green belt
  • Project Management
  • Multi-cultural experience is a plus
