Job Summary

The Behavior Specialist III is responsible for providing assessment, expertise in direct care and treatment of children with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. A Behavior Specialist III provides systematic instruction to children to develop their skills in behavioral safety and compliance, social-emotional skills, on task behavior, and functional communication. A Behavior Specialist III demonstrates advanced knowledge and application of applied behavioral analysis, counseling, and/or social work in conducting their responsibilities.  A Behavior Specialist III demonstrates considerable independence by providing oversight, active training and feedback to other professionals throughout their work with children. The Behavior Specialist III assists in the training and supervision of Behavior Specialists I, II, and other members of the treatment team

Job Responsibilities

1. Under supervision and in conjunction with the clinical team, serves as the primary behavior rehabilitation specialist to assigned patients.

  • In accordance with the approved master treatment plan and under the supervision of the interdisciplinary team, develops behavior modification protocols to address disturbances in behavioral, emotional and social domains of functioning.
  • Independently identify, operationalize and track specific target behaviors that impede patient development.
  • Monitors specific interventions designed to enhance the child’s development in order to maintain a high degree of treatment fidelity.
  • Provides classroom coordination for the implementation of program protocols and new program systems.
  • Supports Behavior Lead in coordinating and maintaining schedule of activities throughout the day
  • May demonstrate clinical/beahivoral skills to Behavior Specialist I and II & Behavior Assistants I and II.
  • Works conjointly with the Lead Behavior Specialist and the  Senior Operations Manager to enhance behavior team performance and program efficiency.

2. Under supervision, participates in patient assessment and treatment.

  • Initiates the assessement of  behavioral/ emotional challenges and needs.
  • Initiates the assessment of social and emotional skills and social and emotional  skill deficits.
  • Assesses relevant family/systems issues.
  • Provides active training and systematic social and emotional skills instruction to groups of children throughout the course of the treatment day.
  • Serves as a resource to  Behavior Specialists I and II and Behavior Assistants I and II.

 3. Maintains appropriate documentation and functional outcome measures for assigned patients.

  • Timely and appropriate documentation in the patient medical record independently.
  • Production of written behavior treatment protocols.
  • Collect and graphically display data on patient goals and target behaviors.
  • Present progress and evaluation of data for the team during behavior and clinical rounds as well as to the families, community supports and schools as needed.
  • Writes detailed discharge summary at the conclusion of the patient’s day treatment course.

4. Maintains a safe therapeutic and hazard free environment.

  • Provides and helps coordinate daily transportation services to children in the program as needed.
  • Provides close supervision to children during classroom and program activities to maintain safety and clinical integrity of the group milieu.
  • Demonstrates and provides a clearly delineated series of non-violent crisis interventions strategies to facilitate improved child functioning.
  • Only as a last resort, when other less restrictive measures have failed to maintain safety, demonstrates and utilizes Non-violent Physical Crisis Intervention.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, oversight and ongoing assessment of both staff and child when they require a restrictive procedure.

5. Participates in and conducts training/education of patient, family and other relevant caregivers/service providers.

  • Participates and contributes to the design and implementation of recommended assessment, and treatment protocols.
  • Translates protocols into recommendations that are easily understood and are feasible to implement by caregivers.
  • Evaluates safe and effective demonstration of acquired skills by family and other caregivers.
  • Assists in orientation of Behavior Specialist I, II and  Behavior Assistants I and II.
  • Provides coverage across treatment rooms for all team member as needed.

6. Professional growth and development.

  • Attends and actively participates in weekly supervision, clinical rounds and behavior team meetings.
  • Participates and contributes to academic activities in the treatment room.
  • Contributes to preparation and delivery of lectures, posters, papers and other professional presentations.
  • Actively participates in in-service trainings and continuing education of team members.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, education, school psychology or a related field.

 

Required Experience: At least four (4) years’ experience with direct care of children with social, emotional and behavioral needs.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Master’s degree or having plans to obtain one, in one of these fields is preferred

Additional Technical Requirements
  • Knowledge of typical and atypical child development and related areas.
  • Knowledge of child psychopathology
  • Knowledge of therapy and psychological assessment with children and families
  • Knowledge of Applied Behavioral Analysis and behavioral methodology and principles.
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing in English.
  • Computer skills including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Ability to direct and motivate staff teams.
  • Critical analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other health care team providers.
