SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This position will support the Engineering Structures Team by performing tasks as directed by department design professionals. The position will have the opportunity to review/perform structural calculations, observe field construction/inspection activities, review proposed work adjacent/over/under the railroad and assist in drawing development for structures projects. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform minor design calculations and drafting (AutoCAD) under the direction of engineers. 
  • Perform calculations for review and approval by a professional engineer. 
  • Edit, revise and publish written construction specifications and engineering practices. 
  • Revise and publish scopes of work. 
  • Assist with correspondence, document tracking and Request for Information (RFI) response. 
  • Review and mark-up engineering drawings and collate associated comments. 
  • Manage department master specifications / engineering practices / standard plans online library 
  • Search, file and review drawings and documents in the department document library/archives, learning to review both historic and modern drawings for applicability to the project or issue at hand. 
  • Assist in document reproduction and/or mark-ups and collating. 
  • Perform basic Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule development and engineering cost estimates utilizing new or established templates and industry/contractor outreach. 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.  
  • Pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering (Structures or Construction Management Emphasis) or related 
  • Must have at least 1 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.  
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to build relationships and to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, managers, field personnel and clerical staff. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • An independent and self-motivated individual who seeks answers and information proactively. 
  • AutoCAD design and drafting experience. 
  • Ability to successfully manage and prioritize multiple tasks. 
  • Interest in railroad transportation industry and/or heavy civil engineering and construction. 
  • Strong PC skills, especially Microsoft Office applications 
  • Ability and willingness to go on short (single workday) trips to observe field conditions, perform site material reviews, assist in inspections / documentation, etc. 
  • Available to work generally full-time 40 hrs/week (7/8am – 4/5pm) during the internship
