Summary of Duties

The Lead Data Analyst – Forecasting is a member of the Revenue Management Products team within the Pricing and Revenue Management (PRM) department at Amtrak. This role will assist the Senior Manager Revenue Management Products in continuous forecasting of ticket revenue and ridership, measuring and communicating variance to forecasts based on various driving factors. This role requires a nuanced understanding of complex business processes and how they impact various performance metrics. Exceptional analytical and data visualization skills are necessary to draw actionable insights from complex datasets and communicate effectively.

 

Essential Functions

  • Data Analysis and Transformation: Conduct in-depth analysis of complex business processes within Amtrak’s Commercial Organization. Utilize advanced SQL, Excel, and Python skills to transform and prepare large datasets for analysis.
  • Forecast Model Development: Lead the development, calibration, and validation of forecast models to continuously predict revenue and ridership by various routes and services. Utilize statistical methods and machine learning algorithms to enhance forecast accuracy and reliability.
  • Automate forecast generation process: Ensure timely updates to forecast models, incorporating recent data and accounting for operational disruptions, seasonal variations, and other influencing factors.
  • Quantify variance due to past events and potential future initiatives:  Conduct diagnostic analytics to quantify impact due to operational changes. Estimate impact and integrate insights from marketing initiatives, product launches, and service enhancements into forecasting processes.
  • Data Visualization and Presentation: Create compelling data visualizations to effectively  communicate forecast insights to various business stakeholders in the broader commercial team.
  • Continuous Learning: Collaborate with subject matter experts across various functions in the commercial team to continually expand the knowledge base. Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in forecasting, data analytics, and data visualization. Continuously improve forecasting methodologies and tools to enhance accuracy, adaptability, and efficiency

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field with a minimum of 6 years’ experience in advanced analytical roles in transportation, supply chain management or related field. (or 3 years with a master’s degree in data science)
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience building and maintaining predictive analytical models.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL or Excel and demonstrated ability to work with large complex datasets. Hands-on experience using Python libraries such as NumPy, Pandas and Scikit Learn in practical applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to relate multiple datasets from complex business processes, simplify and transform them into meaningful features, ready to be consumed in forecast models.
  • Ability to apply supply and demand concepts in problem solving.
  • Demonstrated experience in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to succinctly convey the forecast insights to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Business Analytics, Statistics, or a certification in Data Science.
  • Experience with advanced statistical modeling techniques such as multivariate regression and machine learning algorithms – regression, classification, and clustering.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R for advanced data analysis and modeling.
  • Demonstrated progressive improvement of accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of predictive analytical models.
  • Understanding Pricing philosophies and Revenue Management concepts and their relationship to  travel demand.
  • Familiarity with data engineering principles, ETL and tools for data integration and quality assurance.

The hourly/salary rate is $94,300 – $122,256 for the Lead Data Analyst. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
