Coordinates the release of patient information utilizing multiple storage media, including electronic records. Information and other customer services are performed for authorized parties, ensuring that proper authorization exists for the release of Protected Health Information (PHI). High school graduate or equivalent.
Must have at least three (3) years of medical record/HIM experience.
Two or more years of college
Knowledge of Health Information Management requirements, practices and procedures.
Knowledge of JCAHO/CMS/HIPAA standards and documentation requirements.
Knowledge of medical terminology
Proficient in Windows-based software applications to include MSWord, MS Outlook
Ability to operate standard office equipment (i.e. fax, copy machine, document scanner, etc.)
Ability to foster and maintain good working relationship with internal and external customers.
Ability to set priorities, coordinate and organize multiple tasks and maintain control of workflow.
Ability to work effectively without close supervision
Ability to exercise independent judgment, flexibility and perform multiple tasks in an organized fashion.
55-60 WPM typing preferred.
Key Job Responsibilities
Determines the validity of verbal/written requests for medical information according to established policies and procedures.
Utilizes multiple software applications, as well as other storage media to provide records and/or information in response to ROI requests.
Maintains workflow in Release of Information Department while providing optimal customer service.
Processes requests for medical records and other protected health information (PHI).
Maintains workflow of ROI-request scanning and ensures integrity of patient’s protected health information (PHI) thru communication with other HIM areas.
Maintains care, control and confidentiality of hospital medical records.
Performs miscellaneous clerical functions.
The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion, exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
The Associate is required to have satisfactory hearing and speech in order to communicate with customers and co-workers.
Hearing and vision correction to near-normal is acceptable.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
The Associate must have good balance and coordination.
Conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
May travel locally to other hospitals in MLHC system for the purpose of medical record retrieval (reliable transportation required).
May perform duties without direct supervision.
May work nights or weekend shifts without direct supervision.
