A good resume will get you the interview; the interview will get you the job. The job interview will offer you the opportunity to get to know more information about the company, and the company to gather more information about you.
It cannot be over emphasized that you must be at your best at the interview to secure the job. There are basically three stages you must go through to be successful in your job interview.
The first stage – Before the interview
To adequately prepare for an interview, you need to follow these tips.
- You must bear in mind that interviewers have diverse styles of interrogation. Every one of them has peculiar method of questions, chitchat, tough probing, getting to know each other better and many more.
- Practice with a friend being interviewed and ask critical questions. Alternatively, you may record yourself in a practice interview on a video camera and score your performance
- Prepare at least 7 questions whose answers are not easily found in the company's literature, such as future direction of the company, what makes the company unique from other competitors and the company's plan for future expansion.
-
- Have a clear idea of why you are interested in joining the organization. Your dressing must be professional and conservative.
- Make sure you arrive the venue latest 10 minutes before the interview, collect your thoughts and review the major points you intend to cover. Be courteous and polite to the office staff.
- You should let your personality shine through and approach the interview enthusiastically.
The second stage – During the interview
- You should shake hand firmly and greet the interviewer and introduce yourself as you enter the room.
- Always keep your poise, relax, smile when appropriate and be upbeat through out.
- Remember to maintain eye contact, good posture and speak distinctly. Do not fiddle with your jewelry, hair, clothing or clasp your hands. Sit comfortable in your chair and do not smoke even if asked.
- Bring samples of your academic or professional work and carry extra copies of your resume for reference purposes should the need arise.
- Do not answer questions with one or two words. Do not be passive but let the interviewer take the initiative. Look for an opportunity to direct the conversation to things about yourself that you want the interviewer to hear.
- Close the interview with " I am very interested in the position and thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity to come for the interview"
The third stage – After the interview
- Take record of the key points that came up after you leave the interview. Be sure to note when a decision can be expected
- Analyze the interview objectively, the questions asked, the answers to them, your overall interview presentation and the interviewer's responses to specific points.
The interviewer will examine the following, your interest, maturity, enthusiasm, assertiveness, logic and functional knowledge.
